The SSE Arena, Belfast Launches Innovative Local Water-Saving Solution
As part of our ongoing sustainability journey, The SSE Arena is piloting Wizso – an innovative water saving product developed in Northern Ireland. Available at suite level, the trial aims to explore more sustainable practices and in doing so, reduce water consumption and carbon emissions.
What is Wizso?
Wizso is an environmentally conscious, non-toxic toilet solution designed to reduce unnecessary flushing and promote more efficient water use. After peeing, drop a Wizso into the toilet and the biodegradable pellet neutralises any odours and releases a clean blue colour, offering a hygienic solution and discreet alternative to immediate flushing. By reducing the frequency of flushing, where appropriate, Wizso supports efforts to conserve water while maintaining cleanliness.
Why are we using Wizso?
This pilot aims to help reduce water consumption and the carbon emissions associated with water and wastewater treatment. Today, each of us uses around twice as much water as we did 60 years ago, which is a level of consumption that is unsustainable.
Only 0.3% of all water on Earth is fresh, yet we use around 7.5 litres of clean, drinkable water every time we flush the toilet after urination – that's more than 50 litres per person, per day, just for this one activity. Each flush also generates approximately seven grams of carbon emissions.
By introducing Wizso, we’re trialling a simple, practical behaviour change that helps address this challenge. It supports our wider environmental goals and promotes local innovation in sustainable operations, all while reducing both water waste and carbon emissions.
How does Wizso work?
Wizso will be available in the toilet cubicles within the suite level bathrooms. Guests who have used the toilet for a number one may choose to use Wizso instead of flushing. A Wizso is dropped into the bowl, where it dissolves quickly, neutralises odour, and leaves the toilet fresh, reducing the need for immediate flushing.
Use of the product is entirely optional. However, small actions like this, when adopted at scale, can contribute meaningfully to environmental performance across the venue.
